Keeping Score
Four Squared is a system, it forms a neat package. And just as this order is imposed, these men on their squared off panels are busy ordering things: a progression from T-ing off to the final putt, from shuffling the deck to the last card dealt, from the first cast to the last catch reeled in, even from the first draft to the dregs. Everything is counted, measured, ranked. How we keep score in sport or war is a numbers game that tallies with our views of conquest and mastering. It also permeates our relationship to food and drink and even sexual conquest. Somehow we are always keeping score and trying to find order in our lives. Through all these routines, the men, however, remain isolated and alone on their circumscribed square.
